Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim’s administration is forging ahead with plans to establish an asphalt plant in the Baharini area, a move aimed at significantly reducing the cost of road construction and boosting the county's revenue generation.
In a meeting held on Monday, County Executive for Roads Eng. Joseph Lagat chaired a session with a committee selected to help implement the project. The plant is expected to operate as an independent entity, a key step in achieving Governor Bii's ambitious development goals outlined in his sixth development pillar.
“The Governor’s target of ensuring that every financial year, we gravel 300 kilometres of interward roads and tarmack at least one kilometre in every urban setup will be easily achievable if we realise this dream,” Eng. Lagat stated, emphasizing the transformative impact the plant could have on the county’s infrastructure development.
The committee, which has already visited the proposed site, confirmed that the design for the civil works has been completed, bringing the project one step closer to fruition. Chief Officer for Roads Geoffrey Kirwa noted that the focus is now on operationalizing the plant, which will play a crucial role in increasing the county’s revenue base.
“We need to have a clearly defined scope of work that will ensure the success of this project,” Kirwa added, stressing the importance of detailed planning to make the project sustainable.
Once operational, the asphalt plant is expected to drive down the cost of road construction, allowing Uasin Gishu to undertake more extensive road works, which will enhance connectivity across the county. The plant is also anticipated to contribute significantly to local economic growth by creating job opportunities and improving infrastructure.
As the project moves forward, residents and businesses in Uasin Gishu eagerly await the benefits that this development will bring, particularly in terms of improved roads and better access to resources.
