Makueni County has taken a significant step toward enhancing drought resilience and water security following the commissioning of the Uyi Earth Dam in Masongaleni Ward, Kibwezi East. The Hon. Principal Secretary of the State Department of ASALs and Regional Development, PS Kello Harsama, CBS, led the event, accompanied by Makueni Governor H.E. Mutula Kilonzo Jr., Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu, NDMA Chair Shallow Yahya, CEO Hared A. Hassan, and other political leaders from the county.

The Ksh. 54 million project is a major intervention aimed at mitigating the effects of recurrent droughts in the region. With a storage capacity of 154,745 cubic metres, the dam will directly benefit over 78,000 residents and provide water for approximately 23,000 livestock. The availability of water will not only improve household access but also support small-scale agriculture, empowering local farmers to enhance productivity and strengthen food security.

Speaking at the event, PS Harsama emphasized the government's commitment to sustainable development and resilience-building in ASAL communities. "This project marks a crucial milestone in our ongoing efforts to ensure reliable water access in arid and semi-arid regions. By investing in such infrastructure, we are not only addressing water scarcity but also creating opportunities for agricultural growth and economic empowerment," he stated.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. echoed these sentiments, highlighting the dam’s transformative impact on the livelihoods of Makueni residents. "Access to water is a fundamental necessity, and this dam will go a long way in improving the quality of life for our people. It will enhance food production, promote livestock farming, and provide a reliable water source for domestic use," he noted.

The commissioning of the Uyi Earth Dam aligns with the government’s broader agenda to enhance resilience and promote sustainable water resource management in ASAL regions. This initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between the national and county governments in addressing the pressing challenges faced by communities in drought-prone areas.

With this development, Makueni County is set to experience improved water security, fostering long-term economic and social benefits for its residents.
