Soy MP David Kiplagat Responds to Fertilizer Distribution Allegations

Soy Member of Parliament, David Kiplagat, has strongly rebuked claims made by Nyandarua Senator, Hon. Methu Kaba Methu, who alleged that Uasin Gishu County had been favored in the distribution of subsidized fertilizers by the government.

In a statement released earlier today, Kiplagat addressed the accusations, clarifying that fertilizer distribution is not an arbitrary or equitably distributed resource but rather based on agricultural needs. He emphasized the crucial role of Uasin Gishu and Trans-Nzoia counties as the country’s primary food producers, especially in the Rift Valley region, and the importance of ensuring timely access to fertilizers during the planting season.

"Fertilizer is not like biscuits or money to be handed out evenly," Kiplagat said. "It is allocated based on the needs of the farmers, especially in regions like Uasin Gishu and Trans-Nzoia, which are the food baskets of our nation. These counties contribute 80% of the country's total maize production. Fertilizer is essential for planting, and this is the season in which our farmers in the North Rift are planting their crops to feed the entire country," Kiplagat continued.

He also advised the Nyandarua Senator to review basic knowledge of geography and agriculture. “I would urge you to revisit your class six geography lessons. Otherwise, you risk parading ignorance when it comes to matters of agricultural productivity. Fertilizer is not something we cook; it’s a key input used for planting, not for making chapati,” he added, pointing out that the statement made by Senator Methu was misleading and based on a lack of understanding.

Kiplagat’s remarks are a direct response to the ongoing debate over the allocation of government-subsidized fertilizers to counties, with several regions seeking to ensure equitable distribution to their farmers. The Soy MP reiterated that Uasin Gishu and Trans-Nzoia are key to national food security, and therefore, it is critical to support farmers in these areas during the planting season.

Senator Methu Kaba Methu Responds to Soy MP David Kiplagat’s Remarks

Nyandarua, March 16, 2025 – In an equally heated response to Soy MP David Kiplagat, Hon. Methu Kaba Methu, the Nyandarua Senator, expressed his displeasure at what he termed as Kiplagat's ignorance on the issue of fertilizer distribution.

"I am not amused by your level of ignorance and incapacity to comprehend simple issues," Senator Methu said, clearly upset by Kiplagat's remarks. "So huko Uasin Gishu ni planting season na Nyeri wanapika chapati?" he quipped, referring to Uasin Gishu’s planting season and sarcastically suggesting that Nyandarua, unlike Uasin Gishu, is not facing any agricultural challenges. “Peleka ujinga mbali!” Methu added, implying that Kiplagat’s comments were both misguided and out of touch with the real issues facing farmers across the country.

The exchange between the two leaders reflects the ongoing debates on resource allocation and the challenges of addressing the needs of farmers in different regions of Kenya. Despite the back-and-forth, it is clear that the issue of fertilizer distribution remains a contentious subject for lawmakers, with differing views on how to support agricultural production in various regions of the country.
