A life-changing surgery at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret has restored the vision of Benson Irungu Chege, a 28-year-old man who had been suffering from a debilitating tumor that severely affected his eyesight. The successful operation, carried out by Dr. Florentius Koech, has given Benson a new lease on life, after months of uncertainty and pain.
Benson’s eye problems began in 2023, when he started experiencing blurry vision. Initially, doctors misdiagnosed his condition as simple nearsightedness, and he was given glasses. However, his symptoms worsened, and he began to experience severe headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Despite visiting several hospitals, he was told his condition was related to his vision, with no clear explanation of the underlying issue.
In November 2023, Benson’s condition worsened, and he began to lose his balance and noticed weakness on one side of his body. The blurriness in his vision became unbearable, and it was at this point that his family decided to take urgent action. They took Benson to various hospitals, but his condition continued to deteriorate. A CT scan eventually revealed the presence of a pituitary gland tumor, though it was not until an MRI that the full extent of the tumor was revealed.
“We were devastated when we found out it was a tumor,” said Benson’s twin sister, Rose Chege. “We never imagined that someone so young could have such a condition. We knew we had to act fast.”
Dr. Florentius Koech, a renowned surgeon at Tophill Hospital, was recommended by a family friend. After reviewing Benson’s MRI results, Dr. Koech immediately arranged for a consultation and assured the family that urgent surgery was necessary to prevent further damage to Benson’s eyesight.
“We were received very well at Tophill Hospital,” said Rose. “The services were exceptional, and the staff were incredibly professional and supportive. Dr. Koech didn’t focus on money – he was determined to help Benson. He told us, ‘We must act before it’s too late.’”
Benson underwent surgery the same evening he was admitted, with Dr. Koech leading the procedure. The tumor, which had been pressing on his optic nerves, was successfully removed, and Benson’s vision began to improve almost immediately.
“The surgery went smoothly, and Benson is now recovering well,” said Dr. Koech. “He came to us with severe symptoms, including fatigue, weight loss, and vision loss in one eye. It’s always encouraging to see a patient recover so quickly. Benson is now a happy person, and we are grateful for the success of the procedure.”
Benson, who had been living in constant discomfort and uncertainty, is now able to see again and resume his normal activities. “Before the surgery, I couldn’t even wear glasses because my vision was so poor,” he shared. “Now, I can see clearly again, and I’m so grateful to Dr. Koech for giving me back my life.”
Rose expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Koech and the hospital staff for their care and professionalism throughout the process. “We had almost lost hope, but Dr. Koech gave us a reason to believe again. His kindness and dedication saved my brother’s life.”
Benson’s recovery has been rapid. Just three days after the surgery, he was discharged and is now looking forward to a future free from the debilitating symptoms that had plagued him for so long.
“Dr. Koech’s services are unmatched. We are forever grateful,” Rose added. “He not only saved my brother’s sight but also gave us peace of mind. God is great.”
For those struggling with similar symptoms, Dr. Koech emphasized the importance of early detection and seeking medical advice when health issues persist. “Timely intervention is key,” he said. “Benson’s case is a reminder that tumors can affect people of all ages, and seeking medical attention early can make all the difference.”
