Teacher Accused of Assaulting Student at AIC Chebisaas Girls Kobujoi

A serious incident has been reported at AIC Chebisaas Girls Kobujoi where a 17-year-old Form Four student, Mitchell Chepchumba, is fighting for her life after allegedly being assaulted by a teacher on Tuesday of last week. According to the family, Mitchell's mother, Peris Koech, was informed by the school principal on Thursday that her daughter had been injured and was sick. When Peris arrived at the school on Friday, Mitchell was unable to speak, had swelling on her left hand, and was shaking her head. The student was also unable to walk and was in severe pain.

Mitchell was immediately taken to Kapsebet Referral Hospital, but her condition worsened. Despite being administered painkillers, her health did not improve. She has remained mute since the incident and is now receiving care at Elsoret Memorial Hospital, where doctors have yet to identify a clear improvement in her condition. Her family is concerned as Mitchell is set to sit for her final exams, with the mother pleading for the necessary treatment and for stern actions to be taken against the teacher involved.

According to Deon Cheruiyot, Mitchell's brother, her condition includes blurry vision, extreme agitation, difficulty walking, and pain in her stomach and throat. "She cannot talk and has severe pain. We are very worried and need help to ensure she gets the proper treatment," Deon said.

In an interview, Kimutai Kirui, huma rights activist called for justice, stating that Mitchell was struck on the right side of her head with a computer cable by a teacher. "The doctor is still running tests on her head and neck to understand the extent of the damage, as this was a brutal assault. The computer cable used by the teacher is a lethal weapon. It could have killed her, and we are demanding the Ministry of Education intervene," Kirui stated.

The family has reported the incident to Kapsabet Police Station as a criminal offense, asserting that corporal punishment is outlawed and that such an assault should not be tolerated in schools.

Mitchell's mother, Peris Koech, is calling on well-wishers to help cover her daughter's medical bills, as she is struggling financially. "I am a widow with no income, and my child needs urgent medical attention. I am pleading for any assistance in paying for her treatment. We are hoping for her healing, and we want justice to be served," she said.

The Ministry of Education has yet to release a statement on the incident. However, the family and the community are demanding swift action to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
