A 19-year-old Form Two student from RCEA Tembelio Secondary School in Moiben Sub-County was brutally murdered last night, allegedly by a 25-year-old bodaboda rider at Gem Farm. The suspect, who later surrendered to the police, is accused of defiling the minor before strangling her to death.
Confirming the incident, Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi stated that investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder. “We have arrested the suspect, and he is currently in custody as we investigate the events leading to this horrific act. The motive of the murder is yet to be determined,” said Mwanthi.
According to preliminary reports, the student is said to have been lured by the suspect before falling victim to the heinous crime. Residents of Gem Farm and the larger Moiben area have expressed shock and outrage over the incident, calling for swift justice. Local leaders and human rights activists have also condemned the act, urging authorities to ensure that perpetrators of such crimes face the full force of the law.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) mortuary for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Meanwhile, Mwanthi has urged parents, particularly those with children in day schools, to remain vigilant and ensure they are aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times. “It is crucial for parents to keep track of their children’s movements, especially after school hours, to prevent such unfortunate incidents,” he advised.
The case has reignited concerns over the safety of school-going children and the rising cases of gender-based violence in the region. Authorities have assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted, and justice will be served for the victim and her grieving family.
