Tension Rises as Ledama Ole Kina Rejects Toll Fees Proposal

By Joshua Narkash

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has strongly opposed the government’s proposal to impose toll charges on major public roads, warning of fierce resistance if the plan proceeds.

The proposal, introduced by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, suggests imposing toll fees on existing public roads to address congestion and fund road maintenance. Mbadi defended the initiative, claiming it would ensure fairness by having drivers pay based on their road usage. He argued that tolling would help reduce traffic jams, particularly during holidays, giving travelers the option to pay for faster routes.

But Ledama Ole Kina, in a fiery response on his X account, vehemently rejected the idea. He stated, "If you want toll charges, build new roads! But if you dare tax existing ones, we will fight back!" The senator’s statement made it clear that any attempt to charge Kenyans for using roads they already rely on would face intense opposition.

Mbadi, in defense of the controversial proposal, explained that toll charges would not burden citizens but would instead ensure that road maintenance and congestion management are adequately funded. "We already have the Road Maintenance Levy, but tolling will ensure fairness," he stated. "It should not burden citizens unnecessarily."

The debate over tolling has sparked a larger conversation about fairness and the government's approach to financing infrastructure projects. While some agree with Mbadi’s view that tolling could provide an alternative solution to road congestion, others, like Senator Ole Kina, feel that citizens should not be forced to pay additional fees for roads they already fund through taxes.

The government’s proposal could mark a turning point in the way infrastructure is financed in Kenya, but it also raises questions about the balance between providing essential services and protecting citizens from excessive charges. As the debate intensifies, many Kenyans are anxiously awaiting how the government will move forward with the toll plan.

For now, the issue remains unresolved, with both sides standing firm in their positions. Would the government push forward with the toll roads, or will resistance from leaders like Ledama Ole Kina and the public force a change of direction? Time will tell.
