Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano EGH has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing Nyandarua County as a prime tourism destination. In a bid to harness the county’s vast potential, CS Miano kicked off the week with strategic stakeholder engagements involving the Nyandarua County Government, private sector players, and other key partners in the tourism industry.

The discussions centered on leveraging Nyandarua’s rich natural and cultural heritage to drive economic growth while ensuring sustainable conservation efforts. CS Miano emphasized that tourism remains one of Kenya’s key economic drivers, and counties like Nyandarua—blessed with immense beauty, historical significance, and diverse attractions—must prioritize the sector for enhanced development.

> “Nyandarua is an abode of immense natural beauty, rich heritage, and great potential for tourism and wildlife conservation. As one of Kenya’s key economic drivers, tourism should count as one of Nyandarua’s crucial activities and points of focus,” Miano remarked.

Nyandarua County is home to some of Kenya’s most breathtaking landscapes and historical sites, making it an ideal destination for both local and international tourists. Among the county’s most notable attractions are the Aberdare National Park, a vast, wildlife-rich sanctuary known for its scenic moorlands, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. The park is also famous for Treetops Lodge, where Queen Elizabeth II learned of her ascension to the British throne.

Another major attraction is Lake Ol Bollosat, the only freshwater lake in the Central Kenya region, which serves as a crucial habitat for bird species, including the endangered grey-crowned crane, and supports local fishing activities. The Mau Mau Caves, where Kenyan freedom fighters sought refuge during the struggle for independence, hold immense cultural and historical value, making them a significant heritage site.

Additionally, Nyandarua offers agri-tourism experiences, with its thriving agricultural sector producing potatoes, dairy, and horticultural products. Visitors can experience farm stays, agricultural tours, and farm-to-table experiences, offering a unique blend of tourism and agribusiness.

CS Miano noted that investment in tourism infrastructure, marketing, and stakeholder collaboration is crucial to ensuring Nyandarua’s tourism industry reaches its full potential. With proper policies, improved road networks, better accommodation facilities, and aggressive promotion by the Kenya Tourism Board, Nyandarua can attract a steady flow of visitors, thereby creating jobs, empowering local communities, and enhancing conservation efforts.

The Cabinet Secretary encouraged both public and private sector players to collaborate in developing tourism packages that showcase Nyandarua’s uniqueness and make it a top choice for travelers seeking adventure, heritage, and eco-tourism experiences.

With government support and stakeholder engagement, Nyandarua is on track to becoming a tourism powerhouse—offering unmatched experiences that highlight Kenya’s rich biodiversity, culture, and historical legacy.
