In a move to enhance road safety and support youth employment, over 100 Boda Boda riders in Trans-Nzoia County are set to receive comprehensive driving training and obtain driving licenses, courtesy of the County Executive Committee (CEC) for Education and Vocational Training Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama.
Speaking during the commissioning of the first batch of 24 Bodaboda riders from Kiminini Sub County at the boda boda driving school in Kitale, Trans-Nzoia County CEC for Education and Vocational Training, emphasized on the importance of the training program for the riders' safety on the roads, highlighting the County's commitment to promoting safer riding practices and reducing road accidents through proper training and certification.
"Safety on our roads is paramount, and this training is a crucial step towards ensuring that Boda Boda riders are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate safely. Each participant in this program will receive a 6,800-shilling support to cover their training costs," stated Ms. Mutama.
The initiative, which is part of Governor George Natembeya's agenda for youth empowerment, aims to create a structured and supportive environment for Boda Boda riders. Governor Natembeya has been a strong advocate for the sector, evidenced by his decision to reduce the parking fee for Boda Boda riders from 3,000 shillings per month to 500 shillings per year since the beginning of his term.
Mutama called on all stakeholders in the Boda Boda sector to rally behind the program and ensure its success. "Governor Natembeya's vision for the Boda Boda youths is clear, and with collective support, we can achieve great strides in improving their livelihoods and safety," she added.
The training program is expected to not only enhance the riders' driving skills but also provide them with legal driving licenses, thereby fostering a culture of accountability and professionalism within the Boda Boda industry.
As the first batch of riders will embark on their one Month training journey, the county remains hopeful that this initiative will serve as a model for other regions, demonstrating the positive impact of investing in the skills and safety of Boda Boda riders.
The CEC Education and vocational training added that the primary goal of the training is to enhance road safety. Boda Boda riders, who are often young and inexperienced, face numerous risks on the road. By providing them with professional driving skills and knowledge of traffic rules, the program aims to reduce accidents and fatalities.
“Obtaining a driving license is crucial for legal compliance. Many Boda Boda riders operate without proper documentation, which puts them at risk of fines and legal issues. The program ensures that riders are licensed and compliant with the law, fostering a sense of responsibility and professionalism,” said M.s Mutama.
Janerose Said Boda Boda sector in Trans Nzoia County is a significant source of employment for many youthful people in the County and by supporting them with proper training and licenses, the program helps secure their jobs and ensures that they can continue to support themselves and their families.
“The Boda Boda riders' training program in Trans-Nzoia County is a comprehensive initiative that addresses multiple aspects of road safety, legal compliance, economic empowerment, youth employment, public trust, and community support. It serves as a model for other regions to invest in the skills and safety of their local transportation providers,” Said M.s Mutama.
