Day 6 of the ongoing free maize seed distribution campaign under the Fukuza Njaa Project witnessed another significant milestone today, as Governor George Natembeya led the distribution at Weonia and Amahoro Stadium in Sikhendu Ward. The initiative is part of the county's broader efforts to combat food insecurity and empower local communities through agricultural support.
Governor Natembeya, speaking to the crowds at the two distribution points, emphasized that the initiative is a cornerstone of the county's economic empowerment strategy. "The Fukuza Njaa Project is designed not only to alleviate hunger but also to ensure sustainable food production and economic growth within our communities," the Governor stated. "By providing farmers with high-quality maize seeds, we are enabling them to boost their yields and contribute to food security not only in Trans-Nzoia but across the region."
The initiative targets vulnerable farmers, especially those in rural areas who face challenges in accessing quality seeds and other agricultural inputs. The distribution today was aimed at ensuring that families in Sikhendu Ward, and other affected parts of the county, receive the essential resources needed to grow their own food.
Residents from Weonia and surrounding areas turned out in large numbers, expressing gratitude for the support they are receiving. Many farmers noted that the seeds will go a long way in enhancing their production, allowing them to feed their families and even generate income from surplus crops.
"We have suffered from food shortages in the past few years, and this project gives us hope," said Esther Wambui, a local farmer from Weonia. "The free seeds will help us grow enough maize for consumption and even for sale in the local markets."
Governor Natembeya reaffirmed that the government remains committed to ensuring long-term solutions to food insecurity by continuing to support local farmers with essential agricultural resources, training, and access to markets.
Today's event is part of a wider effort by the Trans-Nzoia County Government to implement initiatives that reduce poverty and promote self-reliance among its citizens. The Fukuza Njaa Project is set to continue its distributions throughout the county, reaching more wards in the coming days.
With the support of both local and national partners, the Trans-Nzoia government hopes that the free seed distribution campaign will provide a much-needed boost to food production and strengthen the economic resilience of farming communities across the region.
