Uasin Gishu County Government Enhances Protection of Mwamba Water Spring

By Jael Maritim

The Uasin Gishu County Government, through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA), is making significant strides to protect the Mwamba water spring in Kapkures, Soy Sub-County, with the aim of ensuring a sustainable water supply for the local community.

Eng. Christopher Mbevi, the Climate Change Unit Officer for Soy Sub-County, shared that the project includes fencing off the area around the spring, setting up two community water points, and constructing a cattle water trough to protect the water source and keep it clean.

"This is a game-changer in water conservation, and we will also plant indigenous trees around the spring as soon as the rains begin," said Eng. Mbevi.

During a site visit to monitor the project's progress, Mr. Said Omar from the State Department for Water and Sanitation commended Uasin Gishu for its successful initiatives under the FLLoCA program. He expressed optimism that these achievements would lead to an increased funding allocation in the coming financial year.

Water Engineer Benadys Chelagat and Design Engineer Celestine Kigen also praised the quality of the project’s construction, particularly highlighting the excellent workmanship of the masonry sump and retaining walls done.

Lilian Chebichii, a longtime resident of Kapkures, expressed her gratitude for the intervention. She noted that the spring has been her main source of domestic water since her childhood.

"Over the weekend, now that other wells have dried up, we, as villagers, come here to wash our clothes, fetch water for our homes, and bring our cattle to drink, we truly appreciate the interventions to protect Mwamba spring, " said Ms. Chebichii.
