In a strategic move to bolster healthcare delivery, Uasin Gishu County has received 22 state-of-the-art vaccine fridges, worth Ksh 22 million, aimed at improving the county's immunization programs. This initiative, made possible through a partnership between the County Government, UNICEF, and the National Vaccines and Immunization Program, will significantly enhance vaccine storage and distribution in both urban and rural healthcare facilities.
The specialized fridges are designed to maintain optimal vaccine storage temperatures for up to eight days without power, ensuring that vaccines reach even the most remote areas of the county. This is critical for immunization efforts, especially in hard-to-reach regions where power outages can disrupt the cold chain necessary for vaccine efficacy.
This latest donation follows the successful deployment of 51 similar fridges last year, which were distributed to various health facilities across the county. The new batch will be distributed to both public and private healthcare centers, further expanding the county's immunization capacity.
During the flag-off ceremony, Uasin Gishu County’s Health Services Executive, Dr. Abraham Serem, stressed the importance of immunization in combating preventable diseases, particularly among children. “Immunization is a key pillar in our health strategy. By ensuring that every child receives the full range of vaccines, we aim to eliminate communicable diseases and protect future generations,” Dr. Serem said.
The initiative is part of the governor’s second pillar of the Nguzo Kumi blueprint, which focuses on improving healthcare accessibility across both urban and rural settings. Dr. Serem emphasized that the addition of these fridges is a step toward ensuring that no child is left behind when it comes to life-saving immunizations.
Dr. Evans Kiprotich, Director of Health Services, further highlighted that the delivery of the fridges would significantly improve immunization coverage in the county. “These strategic deliveries will ensure that vaccines are safely stored and distributed to every child, regardless of location. This development underscores our commitment to providing equitable healthcare services to all our residents,” Dr. Kiprotich stated.
EPI Coordinator, Joshua Masai, echoed these sentiments, noting that the new fridges would help to safeguard the health of the county’s youngest citizens and contribute to a healthier, more resilient future.
Among the facilities to benefit from this donation are Ngoisa Dispensary, Kapkoros Dispensary, Koitoror Dispensary, Palm Care Hospital, and St. Monica Karuna Dispensary, among others.
This initiative highlights Uasin Gishu County’s dedication to improving healthcare services and ensuring that essential immunizations are accessible to all, regardless of geographical barriers.
