Uasin Gishu County Secretary, Ambrose Tarus, held a crucial meeting with the Ogiek Council of Elders to discuss key issues related to economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and the inclusion of the Ogiek community in the county's development agenda. The engagement underscores the county’s commitment to supporting marginalized communities like the Ogiek through sustainable initiatives aimed at improving their livelihoods.
During the meeting, Tarus reaffirmed that the Governor Jonathan Bii-led administration is dedicated to enhancing the welfare of marginalized communities, with a particular focus on the Ogiek people. One of the major topics discussed was economic empowerment, where the county pledged its support for beekeeping, a traditional Ogiek practice, by providing training, modern equipment, and market access. This initiative aims to boost the community’s income and create job opportunities, especially for the youth and women.
The county also emphasized the importance of community participation in development decisions. “We want the Ogiek to be represented in all aspects of decision-making, resource allocation, and development planning,” said Tarus. He added that ensuring the community’s inclusion in these processes would foster more equitable development across Uasin Gishu County.
In a move to improve educational access for the Ogiek community, the county government committed to establishing Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) schools within Ogiek settlements. The administration also pledged to offer scholarships and bursaries to Ogiek students, encouraging them to pursue higher education and develop the necessary skills for the future workforce.
A key issue raised during the discussions was the displacement of the Ogiek from their ancestral lands, which has been a result of the government’s Land Act. Tarus assured the elders that the county government would engage with relevant authorities to find a fair and lasting solution that respects the community’s land rights, while adhering to national regulations.
Recognizing the challenges posed by modernization, the county also promised to help preserve Ogiek heritage by documenting their cultural practices. Additionally, there are plans to promote cultural tourism as a potential income-generating activity for the community, all while safeguarding traditional practices and customs.
Through this engagement, Uasin Gishu County has reiterated its commitment to inclusivity and sustainable development. The county government is determined to ensure that the Ogiek community, despite being historically marginalized, will not be left behind as the county grows and develops.
