UK Digital Access Program Representatives Conduct Monitoring and Evaluation Visit in Busia County

Representatives from the British High Commission's Digital Access Program (DAP) with it's implementing partner KICTANET met with Busia County Governor, Dr. Paul Nyongesa Otuoma to assess the Strengthening Digital Communities project, launched in June 2024 to boost digital inclusion in the county.

The Strengthening Digital Communities project is part of a broader effort to transform digital communities in Kenya, aligning with the UK Digital Development Strategy (DDS) 2024-2030 and Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The DAP team, joined by it's downstream partners including ACWICT, ADT, TECH4G, PLUSFARM, ELDOHUB, and KALRO, aimed to monitor the project's progress and impact.

The project has benefited over 350,000 individuals in Busia County. KICTANet has engaged more than 15,000 Community Development Champions (CDCs), with 8,000 attending training sessions and over 4,000 completing the program.

Additionally, over 1,000 Community Digital Champions (CDCs) have been accredited by the ICT Authority of Kenya, including over 300 persons with disabilities (PWDs) trained.

Governor Otuoma noted that the project aligns with Busia County's Ward-Based Economic Revitalization Program, which aims to improve residents' welfare by connecting them to external markets via digital platforms.

" This initiative has the potential to address food security challenges through digital solutions in agriculture," added the Governor.

The Strengthening Digital Communities project is a testimony to the commitment of both the UK and Kenya towards digital literacy and economic empowerment by equipping communities with digital skills and fostering innovation, enhancing access to e-commerce, smart agriculture, and digital financial services.

The project focuses on foundational digital skills, advanced employability skills for youth, awareness campaigns for inclusion, and collaboration for digital access.

Present at the event were county officials, including County Secretary, CS Oscar Juma, County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Culture and Social Services, Paul Olung’a, Chief Officer for Sports and Culture Dennis Ngira, Chief Officer for Agriculture Elijah Mwaro, Director for Youth Affairs Meshack Tumaini, and his Deputy Emmanuel Juma, among others.
