The University of Eldoret has once again demonstrated its prowess in innovation and research by earning national recognition at the prestigious Presidential Innovation Award (PIA). The annual award, organized by the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), celebrates exceptional creativity and problem-solving initiatives that contribute to economic growth and job creation in Kenya.

In a statement released through its social media channels, the university announced that a team of students, known as The Dynamic Innovators, was shortlisted in the University Category and invited to participate in the highly competitive Presidential Innovation Challenge and Award Pitching Festival. The event took place from March 17 to 21, 2025, at the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas in Naivasha, bringing together Kenya’s top innovators.

At the heart of their success was Tishawing, a groundbreaking agricultural solution developed to address the persistent challenge of bird pest invasions in cereal farms. The innovative system, which promises to safeguard crops and enhance food security, caught the attention of judges, securing the team’s spot among Kenya’s leading student innovators.

Led by Kimberly Natalia Scott, a fourth-year student pursuing Applied Statistics with Computing, The Dynamic Innovators impressed the panel with their excellent presentation and the potential of their solution to positively impact the agricultural sector. The team also consisted of Margaret Kabura (Mechanical and Production Engineering), Brian Yatich (Agriculture and Biotechnology), Keith Etyang (Actuarial Science), and Cynthia Ng'eno (Economics), whose diverse skills played a crucial role in refining and presenting the project.

The students were accompanied by Dr. Becky Aloo, Head of Intellectual Property Management at the University, who provided mentorship and institutional support. This backing reflects the University of Eldoret’s continued commitment to fostering innovation among students, equipping them with the tools and resources necessary to create real-world, market-ready solutions.

This remarkable achievement not only highlights the university’s reputation as a hub of innovation but also reinforces its role in empowering students to develop solutions that tackle critical challenges in Kenya’s economy and society. As the country continues to grapple with agricultural pests, Tishawing could prove to be a game-changer for farmers, ensuring a sustainable future for the agricultural industry.
