One hundred dependents of Kenya Navy servicemen and women have graduated with essential plumbing and electrical skills, marking a significant milestone in the 3rd cohort of a transformative partnership between The Family Group Foundation and the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK). The graduation ceremony was held at the Mtongwe Kenya Navy Headquarters, with attendees celebrating the successful completion of a three-month technical training program.
Chief of Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, who graced the ceremony, commended the program's impact in equipping young people with not only technical skills but also vital soft skills, financial literacy, and essential toolkits for success in the job market.
"I am pleased to witness the profound impact this training program has had on these deserving young men and women," General Kahariri remarked. "This initiative goes beyond just technical skills – it provides the knowledge and resources that will enable them to build successful careers."
The partnership between the Family Group Foundation and MWAK has now seen the successful graduation of three cohorts, benefiting a total of 201 young people. The first cohort included 51 graduates from Kenya Army dependents, while the second saw 50 graduates from Kenya Air Force dependents. With this latest graduation, the program continues to make strides in empowering youth from military families.
Family Bank CEO Nancy Njau highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that over KES 55 million has been invested in vocational training to create long-term impact. "At Family Bank, we believe that true impact goes beyond banking," Njau said. "We are shaping futures, strengthening families, and fueling economic resilience."
The results of the program have been promising: 87% of graduates have attained National Construction Authority (NCA) accreditation, 15% have joined the Kenya Defence Forces as skilled tradesmen, 23% have pursued further training in solar energy, and over 30% have secured employment or started their own businesses. These outcomes reflect the power of vocational training in creating lasting career opportunities.
The program is part of the Family Group Foundation's broader Shared Values Initiatives, which focus on construction, entrepreneurship, development, and business management services. It forms the backbone of the Foundation’s Tufuzu Youth Entrepreneurship Development Project, which provides young adults with technical training and access to the labor market, financing, and strategic partnerships.
Ma’am Grace Kahariri, Chairperson of MWAK, also expressed her pride in the program’s impact. "This partnership serves as a key enabler in empowering and uplifting young talent," she said. "We are pleased to see the Kenya Navy co-investing in this cohort by sponsoring 50 students, further strengthening our mission."
The graduates, aged between 18 and 25, completed hands-on training certified by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) and the NCA. The program ensures that the graduates are equipped to meet industry standards and provides them with sustainable opportunities for dignified income within the KDF fraternity and beyond.
As the initiative continues to grow, it offers hope for more young people to access the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive in the workforce, demonstrating the power of education and collaboration in fostering long-term economic growth.
