Eldoret Human Rights Activist Defends Police Action Against Former Senator Malala Over School Drama Incident

A prominent human rights activist based in Eldoret has come out strongly in support of the police action taken against former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, following controversy surrounding a school drama performance allegedly featuring politically charged content.

Kipkorir Ngetich, a vocal human rights advocate, praised law enforcement for what he termed as “a timely and necessary intervention” to prevent the misuse of school platforms for political agendas. He warned that allowing children to participate in performances with inflammatory lyrics and themes could set a dangerous precedent for the country.

“We cannot allow the former senator or any politician to exploit schools to prepare this country for civil unrest,” Ngetich said. “Using innocent children to push a political agenda is unacceptable and must be treated as a serious security threat.”

The performance in question, reportedly linked to Malala’s political network, is said to have contained lyrics critical of the government and President William Ruto—sparking national debate about the role of schools in political discourse.

Ngetich argued that while freedom of expression is enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution, it must be exercised with responsibility. “Democratic rights and freedoms do not give anyone the license to incite, insult, or spread hate,” he said.

The activist also criticized ongoing online campaigns that he described as abusive and defamatory, particularly targeting President Ruto. “Social media cannot become a space where leaders are vilified in the name of democracy. There must be boundaries,” he stated.

He further called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the judiciary to take firmer action against what he termed as “organized and sponsored hate campaigns.”

“There are growing concerns among citizens that certain elements within the judiciary may be sympathetic to efforts aimed at destabilizing the current government. If insults and defamation are allowed to flourish unchecked, then the entire justice system risks being undermined,” Ngetich warned.

In a passionate plea, he urged political leaders to keep school children out of divisive politics. “We must raise our children in a society that values peace, respect, and unity. Talent should be nurtured for education and national cohesion—not political incitement.”

Ngetich concluded his statement by calling on security agencies to remain firm and proactive in safeguarding national peace, cautioning that ignoring such incidents could lead the country down a dangerous path.

The Ministry of Education and NCIC have yet to officially respond to the allegations or the content of the controversial performance.
