Activist Kipkorir Ngetich Urges ODM's Sifuna to Respect Unity Pact

A local human rights activist has strongly criticized ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna over remarks made during a recent funeral attended by President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, calling on him to respect the spirit of national unity forged by the two leaders.

Kipkorir Ngetich, known for championing peace and social justice in the Rift Valley, expressed concern over what he termed as “childish and disrespectful conduct” by the Nairobi Senator, stating that such behavior undermines the efforts made by President Ruto and Raila Odinga to unite the nation under a shared vision.

"It is shocking that a leader of Sifuna's stature would choose a solemn occasion like a funeral to antagonize the president and his government," said Ngetich. "Even if one does not like the occupant of the presidency, the office itself deserves respect. President Ruto attended that funeral to honor the former  prime minister Raila Odinga, and that moment should have been respected."

Ngetich emphasized that leaders across political divides—both UDA and ODM—must uphold the dignity of national events and refrain from using such platforms for political attacks.

"The ODM party, through Sifuna's remarks, left an impression that it had been waiting for an opportunity to publicly lecture and attack the head of state," he said. "This is not only politically immature, but it also risks unraveling the unity pact we have all welcomed."

He urged Sifuna to seek a personal audience with President Ruto if he has grievances to air, instead of using public platforms to stir division.

Furthermore, Ngetich condemned what he termed as the politicization and radicalization of school-going children, warning that dragging minors into political battles is dangerous and unethical.

"As a country, we cannot allow our young minds to be poisoned in the name of democracy. Using children to fight political wars is a red line that must not be crossed," he said.

The activist called on the ODM leadership to rein in members who appear intent on destabilizing the unity efforts spearheaded by the president and Raila Odinga, warning that such actions could threaten national cohesion ahead of the next general election.

He also urged political leaders to avoid turning funerals into political rallies, and instead allow the bereaved families and the nation to mourn with dignity.

"President Ruto and Raila Odinga have shown it is possible for former rivals to work together for the good of the nation. That example must be protected and emulated," Ngetich said.

As the country looks ahead to the next electoral cycle, Ngetich said Kenya stands at a unique place in history where peace, unity, and development must take precedence over political ego and personal interests.

“Let Sifuna and all leaders choose to be counted on the right side of history. Let’s preach peace, nurture unity, and respect each other as we move forward as one Kenya,” he concluded.
