In response to recent claims of poor governance in Bungoma County, the Alternative Voice movement has come together to advocate for integrity, accountability, and responsible leadership. During their recent meeting, the group, which consists of community leaders and activists, emphasized the critical role youth play in shaping the future of the county. They urged young people to resist being exploited by politicians seeking to use them for selfish gains.
Led by Chairperson Ignitius Nyukuri and Patron Evans Kakai, the movement warned the youth of the dangers of accepting handouts from politicians with no genuine intentions of advancing their communities’ well-being. "It is imperative that our young people realize their worth and not allow themselves to be pawns in political games that do not serve their interests or the community’s well-being," said Nyukuri.
The Alternative Voice group, formed to address key issues affecting governance in the region, has been vocal about political betrayal, employment injustices, and the need for effective policy implementation. They are calling for the establishment of youth empowerment policies to provide meaningful employment opportunities and promote development across the county.
"We urge voters to carefully vet candidates before the upcoming elections," Nyukuri continued. "It is vital that we elect leaders who genuinely care about the community and are committed to real, lasting development. The cycle of electing leaders who prioritize personal gain over public service must end."
Lillian Etabale, the Movement Coordinator from Tongaren, raised concerns about the exploitation of women in politics, denouncing the manipulation of women by certain political figures. "It is unacceptable that some men are using women as sexual objects to secure political positions," Etabale stated. "We warn those responsible that action will be taken against them. Our movement stands firmly against any form of manipulation and will advocate for women’s rights and dignity in the political arena."
In addition to these issues, the movement also expressed its concerns about the leasing of Nzoia Sugar Company, urging a thorough audit before any agreements are made. According to Evans Kakai, transparency and accountability are essential to ensuring that the interests of the community are safeguarded. "Before any lease agreement is made, we call for a full audit to ensure that the public’s resources are protected and that the community will truly benefit," Kakai said.
The Alternative Voice movement concluded by calling for a united effort to foster a culture of good governance in Bungoma County. They emphasized the need to empower youth, protect women’s rights, and hold leaders accountable for their actions. "It is time for leadership that truly represents and serves the people," the group declared.
As the county prepares for the upcoming elections, the Alternative Voice movement continues to advocate for change and a leadership that prioritizes the needs of Bungoma’s citizens above personal or political interests.
