April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month: Dr. Nyongesa Catherine Urges Men to Prioritize Screening

By John Kariuki

April marks Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, a vital time to raise awareness about one of the most treatable cancers when detected early. Dr. Nyongesa Catherine, a renowned medical professional, is urging men to be proactive about their health and to overcome any hesitation about getting screened for testicular cancer. With early detection, testicular cancer has a very high cure rate, and Dr. Nyongesa's message this month is simple but powerful: don’t wait—take action!

"Guys, your health matters! Testicular cancer is very treatable if detected early. Make self-exams a regular part of your routine. It only takes a few minutes and could save your life. Don't be shy, know your body!" Dr. Nyongesa emphasized.

Testicular cancer, though less common than other forms of cancer, primarily affects men between the ages of 15 and 35. The good news is that it is one of the most curable forms of cancer if detected early, with a survival rate of over 95%. Yet, many men still shy away from seeking medical advice or doing regular self-examinations due to embarrassment or lack of awareness.

Self-exams are simple and only take a few minutes. Dr. Nyongesa encourages men to regularly check their testicles for any unusual lumps, swelling, or tenderness. These symptoms are often the first sign of testicular cancer, and detecting them early can make all the difference in the outcome. It’s important to perform the exam in a warm shower when the skin is relaxed, and to feel each testicle for irregularities. If anything abnormal is noticed, it’s crucial to seek medical advice immediately.

Despite its high treatability, testicular cancer remains one of the least discussed health issues among men, contributing to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Nyongesa advocates for a shift in attitude, urging men to be open and proactive about their health, just as they would with any other aspect of their well-being. Having regular checkups with a doctor, especially if you notice anything unusual, is an essential part of preventive healthcare.

In addition to self-exams, Dr. Nyongesa also stresses the importance of professional screenings, which can further detect any abnormalities that may not be noticeable to the individual. Healthcare professionals can offer further tests, including ultrasounds or blood tests, if necessary.

This Testicular Cancer Awareness Month is not just about spreading knowledge, but also about creating a supportive environment where men feel comfortable discussing their health. By breaking down the stigma surrounding testicular cancer, we can encourage early intervention and ultimately save lives.

So this April, take a few minutes to check in on your health. Make self-exams part of your routine, stay informed, and don’t be afraid to seek help if something feels off. Early detection is the key to successful treatment, and you can play an important role in taking control of your health.
