Body of Missing Multimedia University Student Discovered in Water Tank

The body of Sylvia Kemunto, a missing student from Multimedia University (MMU), was discovered on Wednesday night in a water tank on the rooftop of one of the institution's hostels. The 21-year-old Mass Communications and Computer Science student had been missing for three days, with her disappearance raising concerns among family and friends.

Kemunto was last seen on Sunday, March 30, 2025, when she was alone in her room at Block B, Room 90, after her roommate left for church. According to initial reports, Kemunto's boyfriend, Philip Eric Mutinda, a first-year Electrical Engineering student, visited her room around 1 pm on the day of her disappearance. Authorities later learned that the boyfriend had been seen handling a suitcase in his room the evening of the same day, which he reportedly attempted to lie on, despite it seeming uncomfortable.

The following morning, the suitcase was missing, and a search for Kemunto began after her mother, Triza Kwamboka, traveled to the university upon hearing that her daughter was unaccounted for. The school confirmed Kemunto’s absence and an Occurrence Book (OB) entry was made at Langata Police Station. Police immediately began investigating the case and traced Kemunto’s phone records, which indicated her last known location within the university compound.

On Wednesday, during an ongoing search operation, a foul smell led investigators to the source— a sealed water tank atop one of the hostels. Upon opening the tank, they discovered Kemunto's decomposing body, which had been hidden in the tank, sealed with wire and weighed down with a heavy stone. The retrieval process took nearly two hours, with the body transported to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The circumstances surrounding Kemunto's death have left her family searching for answers. "We want the truth, especially from the school. How could he kill her and move her body undetected?" questioned Kemunto's uncle, Clinton Nyamare, in an emotional plea for justice.

As investigations continue, police are focusing on Mutinda, who is believed to have been the last person seen with Kemunto before her disappearance. Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the motive behind the student's tragic death remains unclear.

Family, friends, and students at MMU are left in shock, mourning the loss of a promising young woman whose life was cut short under mysterious and chilling circumstances. The university has yet to release an official statement, but the case has garnered widespread attention, with many demanding accountability for the events leading to Kemunto's death.

Further updates will follow as investigations unfold.
