The body of a police officer was on Wednesday afternoon discovered floating in River Moiben at Kapsiliot village in Elgeyo Marakwet County, sparking shock and sorrow among residents and law enforcement colleagues.
The deceased, identified as Justin Kirui, 48, was attached to a police station in Kisumu County. According to authorities, Kirui had been in the area visiting a relative before the tragic incident occurred.
Confirming the discovery, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said the body was spotted by local residents who immediately alerted the police. Officers responded to the scene and retrieved the body from the river.
“It is believed that the officer may have accidentally fallen into the river while heading home from visiting a relative in the village,” said Commander Mulinge. He added that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
The body was taken to the Iten County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Kirui’s colleagues and family members have described him as a dedicated officer who served with commitment and integrity. His death comes as a blow to the police fraternity and his local community.
Police have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that may aid in the ongoing investigations.
