Busia Woman Representative Hon. Catherine Omanyo has lauded President Dr. William Ruto for appointing Dr. Bonface Makokha as the new Principal Secretary for Economic Planning and Treasury, calling it a proud moment for Busia County and a boost for the country’s economic direction.
In a statement issued shortly after Dr. Makokha’s swearing-in ceremony, Hon. Omanyo extended her heartfelt congratulations, praising the new PS’s academic credentials, professional experience, and deep roots in the community.
“I warmly congratulate Dr. Boniface Makokha, Principal Secretary for Economic Planning and Treasury, on his swearing-in today. His expertise brings hope for strengthened economic strategies for our country,” she said.
Dr. Makokha becomes the second Principal Secretary from Busia County to serve in President Ruto’s administration, joining Susan Mangeni, the PS for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME). Another high-ranking government official from the county is Mr. Arthur Amug Osiya, Principal Administrative Secretary in the Executive Office of the President.
Born and raised in Siera village in Lupida Sub-location, Bukhayo North/Walatsi Ward, Nambale Sub-county, Dr. Makokha’s journey to national leadership is a testament to perseverance and excellence. He began his education at Lupida Primary School under the headship of the late Mr. Okoit and shared a classroom with current area MCA Gardy Jakaa, his childhood friend and classmate.
Dr. Makokha holds a Bachelor's degree in Education (Science) and a Master’s degree in Physics, among other professional qualifications. His career spans teaching physics and chemistry at Kolanya Girls National School, lecturing at Daystar University, and serving in senior positions within both regional and international organizations.
Busia residents have welcomed the appointment with pride, describing Dr. Makokha as a diligent professional whose rise symbolizes hope and opportunity for the youth in the region.
“As a county, we are proud. His appointment is not only a personal achievement but a reflection of the untapped potential within Busia,” Hon. Omanyo added.
Dr. Makokha is expected to bring a fresh, data-driven approach to economic planning, focusing on inclusive development, fiscal discipline, and innovative policy solutions in line with President Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
