Busia County Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo has reiterated the need for urgent and stringent action against doping in Kenya, citing the growing threat it poses to the health, careers, and integrity of young athletes.
Speaking after a consultative meeting with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), Hon. Omanyo emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to combat the vice. She said the discussions focused on current challenges in tackling doping and explored ways to protect athletes from exploitation by unscrupulous suppliers of banned substances.
“We must safeguard the integrity of our sports and protect the future of our athletes. It is unacceptable that some individuals continue to profit by pushing harmful substances onto young, promising talents,” she stated.
Omanyo underscored the need to hold accountable those who introduce athletes to doping, whether through performance-enhancing drugs or contaminated supplements. She stressed that a multi-agency approach was necessary to dismantle supply chains and enforce strict penalties on violators.
The legislator also held a separate meeting with the Chairman and officials of the Association of Gaming Operators of Kenya (AGOK). Discussions centered around responsible gaming and enhancing regulatory frameworks to ensure the industry operates ethically and contributes positively to society.
"Just as we must protect our athletes, we must also ensure the gaming sector is not only well-regulated but also driven by responsible practices," Omanyo said.
She called on stakeholders, including lawmakers, sports federations, and health officials, to rally behind policy reforms and grassroots education initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of doping.
“Doping robs athletes of their dignity, puts their health at risk, and undermines Kenya’s proud legacy in sports. We cannot afford to look away,” she concluded.
The Woman Representative’s call comes amid increased scrutiny of Kenya’s athletics sector following a rise in doping-related suspensions. Her stance adds to growing public demand for more robust interventions to restore credibility and inspire confidence in the nation’s sports systems.
