Change of Guard at the Ministry of Health as Hon. Aden Duale Takes Over from Dr. Deborah Barasa

In a brief yet significant ceremony held today at the Ministry of Health’s Head Office, Hon. Aden Duale officially took over as the new Cabinet Secretary for Health, succeeding Dr. Deborah Barasa. The ceremony, attended by key leadership from the Ministry, marked a smooth transition of leadership within the Ministry, with top officials extending their support for the incoming Cabinet Secretary.

Hon. Duale, who takes over the health docket at a critical time, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing healthcare in Kenya. He acknowledged the achievements of his predecessor, Dr. Barasa, and promised to build on the foundations she set during her tenure.

“I am honored to take on this responsibility, and I extend my deepest appreciation to Dr. Barasa for the excellent work she has done in advancing the Ministry’s goals,” Hon. Duale said in his remarks. “I look forward to working with the Ministry’s leadership to ensure that we continue to prioritize the health and well-being of every Kenyan.”

The ceremony was attended by the Ministry’s senior leadership, including Principal Secretaries Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards) and Mr. Harry Kimtai (Medical Services), who both congratulated Hon. Duale on his appointment and pledged their full support to the new Cabinet Secretary.

“We are confident that under Hon. Duale’s leadership, the Ministry will continue to grow and address the evolving health challenges in Kenya,” said Ms. Muthoni, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving the Ministry’s goals. Mr. Kimtai echoed these sentiments, noting the Ministry’s commitment to advancing public health and medical services for all Kenyans.

Hon. Duale’s appointment as Health Cabinet Secretary comes at a time when the country is facing various public health challenges, including the ongoing need for accessible healthcare, tackling disease outbreaks, and improving the quality of medical services across the nation. As the new Cabinet Secretary, he is expected to prioritize the strengthening of the healthcare system, improve health infrastructure, and ensure that health services are more equitable and accessible to all Kenyans.

Dr. Barasa, in her farewell remarks, expressed her confidence in Hon. Duale’s ability to continue driving the Ministry's mandate forward. She also thanked the staff and leadership of the Ministry for their support during her tenure, acknowledging their dedication and hard work.

“Leadership is about continuity, and I believe Hon. Duale has the right vision and determination to lead the Ministry to greater success,” Dr. Barasa said.
