The Committee on Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers, led by Hon. Lydia Haika (Taita Taveta), recently held a briefing with the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) to discuss a proposal aimed at improving the efficiency of labour migration services in the country. The proposal suggests integrating a one-stop shop for labour migration services into the Huduma Centre framework, a move intended to streamline government service delivery for citizens nationwide.
The integration plan seeks to enhance the accessibility and convenience of key public services related to labour migration, ensuring that Kenyans can easily access vital services, such as visa applications, work permits, and other migration-related documentation, under one roof. By utilizing the Huduma Centre model, the proposal envisions improving the efficiency and user-friendliness of these services, benefiting both the migrant workforce and the broader public.
To ensure the proposal meets the needs of stakeholders, the Committee plans to conduct a series of engagements with various sectors. These consultations aim to gather feedback and insights from relevant groups, including workers, employers, and migration experts. The information gathered will be used to fine-tune the proposal, making it more inclusive and practical for all involved.
As part of its efforts to assess the current framework, the Committee also intends to visit the existing one-stop shop located at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The visit will offer firsthand insights into its operations, allowing the Committee to evaluate its effectiveness and identify potential areas for improvement.
Hon. Haika emphasized the importance of the proposal, noting that a more accessible, efficient, and convenient labour migration system would not only improve the quality of service delivery but also foster greater economic opportunities for Kenyans seeking employment abroad.
The Committee is expected to present its findings and a refined proposal in the coming months, with hopes of enhancing Kenya’s position in the global labour migration landscape.
