In a significant step towards strengthening regional and continental security, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen this morning officially opened the second Mashariki Cooperation Conference. The 5-day event, held in Naivasha, brings together intelligence and security chiefs from across Africa and beyond to address the growing transnational security challenges that threaten stability in the region and globally.
Under the theme, "Consolidating and Deepening our Intelligence Cooperation Towards Regional and Continental Peace and Stability," the conference is focused on fostering stronger collaboration among African nations and enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms. As global security dynamics evolve, this gathering aims to build a united front against emerging threats such as terrorism, cyber-attacks, and organized crime.
In his opening speech, CS Murkomen underscored the increasing unpredictability of security challenges and emphasized the urgent need for African nations to adopt more technological innovations in their security operations. He called for a shift towards promoting self-reliance in the continent’s security infrastructure to better respond to these ever-evolving threats.
"We must leverage our collective intelligence resources and technological advancements to enhance our capacity to tackle these challenges head-on. This conference is an important milestone in ensuring that Africa takes the lead in safeguarding its future," Murkomen stated.
The opening ceremony was also attended by distinguished guests including H.E. Juan Antonio Bibang Nchuchuma, Minister to the Presidency of the Republic in Charge of Foreign Security from Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Henri Wanzet-Linguissara, Minister and Special Advisor from the Central African Republic, Hon. Nelson Koech, Chairperson of the Kenya National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations, and Mr. Noordin Haji, Director General of the National Intelligence Service-Kenya.
CS Murkomen reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts, not only within Africa but also with international partners, to address the multifaceted nature of security threats. He emphasized that only through strengthened cooperation and innovation can Africa ensure peace and stability on the continent.
The Mashariki Cooperation Conference has become a critical platform for sharing intelligence, best practices, and new strategies to address the security challenges of today’s world. This year’s conference highlights the growing commitment of African leaders to take ownership of their security landscape and ensure the safety and prosperity of future generations.
