Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has today lauded the pivotal role played by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in addressing the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse across Mombasa and the country. The CS's remarks came after visiting the Miritini Rehabilitation Centre, where hundreds of young Kenyans are receiving care and treatment for substance abuse under NACADA’s oversight.
Speaking during his visit to the rehabilitation centre, CS Murkomen acknowledged the Centre’s impact in restoring hope to individuals struggling with addiction. "NACADA continues to play a critical role in the fight against drug and substance abuse, not just in Mombasa but across the country. The efforts being made here at Miritini are a testament to the government’s commitment to rehabilitating individuals and ensuring they regain their lives," said Murkomen.
The CS also highlighted the government’s ongoing measures to tackle the broader drug menace. "The government is strengthening the Anti-Narcotics Drug Unit to tackle drug peddlers and dismantle criminal networks," he stated, underscoring that increased intelligence gathering and enhanced collaboration with enforcement and investigative agencies are key to the success of the fight against drugs.
Following his visit to Miritini, CS Murkomen toured the Government Chemist in Mombasa, where he outlined the ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing the agency. "We are institutionalizing reforms within the Government Chemist to enhance its capacity. This includes upgrading equipment, modernizing infrastructure, and establishing a robust legal framework that will professionalize investigations and improve service delivery," Murkomen explained.
The Government Chemist is a vital arm of the country's forensic services, providing critical analysis and evidence for law enforcement agencies. Murkomen's remarks emphasized the need for enhanced capabilities to support investigations into criminal activities, including drug-related offenses, and to ensure the effective administration of justice.
These efforts are part of a broader government strategy to combat drug abuse, strengthen law enforcement, and enhance forensic services. Murkomen's visit to both the Miritini Rehabilitation Centre and the Government Chemist highlights the government’s commitment to not only addressing the immediate challenges posed by drug abuse but also investing in long-term reforms to improve the country's legal and healthcare systems.
As part of its ongoing initiatives, the government remains focused on creating a safer, healthier environment for all Kenyans through coordinated responses, stronger enforcement, and comprehensive rehabilitation efforts.
