CS Murkomen Leads High-Level Security Meeting in Chesongoch to Consolidate Peace in Kerio Valley

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen today presided over a high-level multi-agency security meeting in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet County, as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate peace and stability in the restive Kerio Valley region.

The meeting brought together senior security officials and administrators from Marakwet East, Baringo West, Tiaty, Kerio Valley, and Pokot Central sub-counties — areas historically affected by intercommunal violence, cattle rustling, and banditry.

Present at the meeting were Deputy Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Eliud Lagat, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan, Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Commandant Joseph Limo, and Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati. County Commissioners Abdullahi Khalif (West Pokot), John Korir (Elgeyo Marakwet), and Stephen Kutwa (Baringo), as well as other senior administrative and security officers, also attended the session.

Speaking after the deliberations, CS Murkomen emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring and sustaining peace in the volatile region through a combination of enhanced security operations, community engagement, and socio-economic development.

“We are here to affirm our unity and resolve in ensuring that the people of Kerio Valley can live in peace and pursue their livelihoods without fear. This is not just a security issue — it’s a matter of dignity, development, and justice,” said Murkomen.

He reiterated the government’s plan to strengthen inter-county coordination, deploy more specialized security personnel, and prioritize development projects that address the root causes of conflict, including marginalization and competition for scarce resources.

The CS also directed county security teams to intensify intelligence-driven operations, enforce disarmament where necessary, and enhance collaboration with local leaders and elders to promote dialogue and reconciliation.

This meeting marks the latest in a series of strategic interventions by the Ministry of Interior aimed at transforming the Kerio Valley from a corridor of conflict into a zone of peace and prosperity.
