CS Murkomen Urges Police Commanders to Lead With Integrity and Inspire Change

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has emphasized the critical role of county police commanders in shaping a modern, people-centered National Police Service. Speaking earlier today during a lecture at the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA) in Ngong, CS Murkomen called on senior officers to consistently nurture leadership excellence and invest in mentoring their teams.

“Our county commanders are at the heart of police operations. They coordinate security responses, supervise sub-county commanders, and directly influence how the police are perceived by the public,” said Murkomen. “Strong, ethical, and empathetic leadership at this level is essential in building public trust and improving service delivery.”

Addressing senior officers undergoing advanced leadership training, Murkomen underscored the importance of continuous professional development and teamwork. He noted that effective policing relies not only on command structures but also on collaboration with communities and stakeholders.

“A motivated, well-coordinated police force must begin with inspired leadership. When our officers feel supported and guided, they perform better and engage more positively with the public,” he added.

The Cabinet Secretary also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to accelerating reforms in the National Police Service. These include ongoing modernization efforts, policy and legal reforms, and enhanced capacity-building programs — areas in which the NPLA is expected to play a central role.

“The modernization of our police service is not just about equipment or infrastructure. It’s about mindsets, professionalism, and values. The Academy will remain a pillar in nurturing the next generation of police leaders who can meet the evolving security needs of our country,” Murkomen said.

Present during the engagement were Deputy Inspector General (Kenya Police Service) Eliud Lagat and NPLA Commandant Mathiu Kainga, among other senior officials.
