CS Tourism Rebecca Miano Highlights Key Areas of Focus at the 2nd UN Tourism Africa and Americas Ministerial Summit

During the 2nd UN Tourism Africa and Americas Ministerial Summit, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Rebecca Miano, emphasized the critical importance of investment, strengthening air connectivity, and promoting sustainable tourism development. The summit, which is focusing on resilience-building, attracting investment, and advancing education and skills in the tourism sector, is taking place at a pivotal moment in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing delegates, CS Miano noted that Africa has seen a positive trajectory in its recovery from the pandemic’s devastating effects, signaling a promising future for the tourism sector. She highlighted the role of regional collaboration and partnerships in driving growth, particularly through "South-South" engagements, which prioritize regional integration as a means to stimulate economic development and foster a more inclusive tourism landscape for both Africa and the Americas.

"This year's summit presents an invaluable opportunity to discuss how we can jointly invest in our tourism sectors, strengthen air connectivity, and promote sustainable development," said CS Miano. "With the continent's remarkable recovery, there is no better time to engage in these critical conversations, which will not only enhance the economic contributions of tourism but also create more inclusive opportunities for both regions."

The focus on "South-South" cooperation is seen as a key avenue to create a more interconnected and resilient tourism sector that benefits from shared knowledge, resources, and experiences. Miano underlined the importance of these partnerships in fostering growth and enabling a turnaround in the tourism sector, positioning both Africa and the Americas as leaders in sustainable tourism practices.

She also stressed that the growth of the tourism industry goes hand in hand with the development of human capital, advocating for education and skills training as crucial pillars for the continued success of the sector. This aligns with the summit’s goals of advancing education and equipping the workforce with the necessary tools to thrive in the evolving tourism landscape.

As the summit progresses, CS Miano’s remarks underscore the commitment to driving regional cooperation and investment, ensuring that tourism becomes an even more impactful and inclusive sector for both Africa and the Americas in the years to come.
