In a move aimed at boosting local infrastructure and improving livelihoods, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki today inspected the ongoing construction of the Yamo Dam in Samburu County, which is set to play a significant role in addressing water scarcity in the region. The 1.5 million cubic metre dam, under construction at a total cost of Ksh 2.2 billion, is expected to be completed by June 2026. Once completed, the dam will provide critical water resources to the area, benefiting both local communities and agricultural activities.
Speaking during the inspection, Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring sustainable development projects are delivered on time, which will enhance the quality of life for the people of Samburu County. He noted that the laying of the reticulation pipeline was among the key steps in ensuring that water from the Yamo Dam reaches various parts of the region.
Modern Market for Maralal Town
Following his inspection of the Yamo Dam, the Deputy President officially commissioned the new Maralal Municipal Fresh Produce Market, a major development initiative aimed at improving trade and commerce in the area. The market, built at a cost of Ksh 73 million, with Ksh 50 million from the National Government and Ksh 23 million from the County Government, features state-of-the-art facilities that will create a dignified and secure environment for local traders.
The market will be equipped with special rooms for lactating mothers, coolers to preserve fresh produce, and an ICT hub to facilitate e-commerce. These features are expected to empower local traders, especially women, and open up new avenues for business growth and innovation in the region.
“The completion of this market is a testament to the government's efforts in ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of their location, has access to modern and dignified spaces to conduct their businesses. We are providing not only a physical structure but an ecosystem that will support economic growth and sustainability,” Deputy President Kindiki said during the commissioning ceremony.
A Unified Effort for Samburu’s Growth
Governor Jonathan Lati Lelelit of Samburu County, along with key local leaders, including Senator Steve Lelegwe, Woman Representative Pauline Lenguris, and Members of Parliament Lentoijoni Jackson Lekumontare (Samburu East), Naisula Lesuuda (Samburu West), Letipila Dominic (Samburu North), Elijah Njoroge (Gatundu North), and John Bwire (Taveta), joined the Deputy President in the groundbreaking ceremony.
The local leadership expressed their gratitude for the projects, highlighting the positive impact these developments will have on the community’s well-being and the region's economic progress. Samburu County Assembly Speaker Steve Lenamarle and other community leaders were also present, further demonstrating the collective effort to drive growth and improve the standard of living for residents.
In closing, Deputy President Kindiki reiterated that the government remains dedicated to creating opportunities for all Kenyans and ensuring that projects like the Yamo Dam and the Maralal Municipal Market will leave a lasting positive impact on the lives of those in Samburu County and beyond.
