The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Administration Police Service (APS), Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, today paid a working visit to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Headquarters in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where he commended officers for their dedicated service and highlighted the importance of mental health within the police service.
The DIG was warmly received by ASTU Commandant Mr. Joseph K. Limo, SAIG, and other senior officers. During the tour, Mr. Masengeli inspected several of the unit’s key facilities, including its educational institutions, vehicle maintenance garage, water purification and packaging plant, and other operational installations.
Speaking to officers based at the headquarters, Mr. Masengeli delivered a candid and compassionate message centered on mental health, a topic gaining increasing attention in the security sector.
“There is no shame in seeking help or speaking out,” he told officers. “Your mental wellbeing is just as critical as your physical readiness. Commanders must be approachable, must listen when spoken to, and must provide an environment where every officer feels heard and supported.”
He urged officers to prioritize self-care and wellness while continuing to uphold the values of the Service. He also praised the Unit’s collaboration with other national security agencies in delivering on its mandate to serve and protect, particularly in areas affected by livestock theft and banditry.
The visit coincided with the closing ceremony of the Equestrian Sports Federation of Kenya’s training program, which was being held at the ASTU facility. The DIG, who presided over the event, praised the integration of equestrian skills into policing, especially in rural and remote deployments where mobility remains a tactical necessity.
Mr. Masengeli was accompanied by a distinguished team, including the APS Director of Operations Mr. Jackson Kangani, SAIG; Deputy Commandant ASTU Mr. Bernard Mbatha, AIG; and former ASTU Commandant Mr. Richard Ngatia, among other senior officials.
The visit reaffirmed the leadership's commitment to operational excellence, officer welfare, and continued modernization of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit — one of the country’s most specialized law enforcement branches.
