Disruption at Mwiki Church as Politicians’ Visit Turns Chaotic, Police Launch Probe

A Sunday church service in Mwiki, Kasarani Sub-County, descended into chaos after a mob of over 100 motorcycle riders stormed the venue shortly after the arrival of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a host of other politicians.

According to local authorities, the riders, each ferrying two to three pillion passengers, trailed the former DP’s entourage from Kangundo Road before creating a commotion within the church compound. Eyewitnesses reported that the group, described as rowdy and aggressive, disrupted the service and began demanding money from the political leaders.

Gunshots were soon heard from the church grounds, prompting officers from Mwiki Police Station to respond swiftly. Police confirmed that the shots were fired by VIP security personnel and licensed civilian firearm holders in an attempt to protect the leaders from the mob, which had begun vandalizing parked vehicles and damaging church property.

Ten motorcycles were abandoned at the scene, and several individuals suspected of participating in the chaos were arrested and are currently being held at Mwiki Police Station.

Mwiki police have since launched investigations into the incident, focusing on identifying the masterminds behind what appears to have been a well-coordinated disruption. Authorities noted that the church had not alerted police to the planned political attendance, leaving law enforcement unprepared for the scale of the gathering.

"This unfortunate incident could have been avoided had the organizers informed the police in advance. We urge all institutions hosting public events, especially those involving political figures, to coordinate with security agencies,” read a statement from the Mwiki police command.

The National Police Service has also weighed in, condemning the incident and warning against acts of violence and intimidation during public events.

"We call on members of the public to maintain peace and refrain from disorderly conduct that endangers lives and disrupts community harmony. There are proper channels for airing grievances—violence is not one of them,” the statement added.

Sunday's incident adds to a growing list of politically-charged disruptions witnessed across the country in recent weeks, raising concerns over the security of public figures and the safety of community gatherings.

Investigations are ongoing, with authorities vowing to bring all those involved to justice.
