In a move poised to redefine the trajectory of Gor Mahia Football Club, Mr. Eliud Owalo has officially been unveiled as the club’s new Deputy Patron. A lifelong supporter, registered member, and longtime benefactor of the club, Mr. Owalo brings both passion and high-level experience to the role. He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President of Kenya.
Mr. Owalo’s appointment comes at a critical moment as Gor Mahia, Kenya’s most decorated football club, seeks to reestablish itself as a dominant force both locally and across the African continent.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Mr. Owalo outlined an ambitious blueprint for the club’s future. "My mission is to reengineer the operations of Gor Mahia FC and transform it into the largest and most successful football club in Africa," he declared. “Our immediate priority is to build a stadium, a Club House, and residential facilities for players and technical staff - and to do it within the shortest time possible.”
At the core of his vision is a commitment to modern infrastructure and professional club management. He revealed that plans are already underway for the acquisition of land to construct a state-of-the-art stadium - a game-changing development for a club that has long relied on shared public venues.
Mr. Owalo also pledged to establish a professional secretariat to streamline operations and boost administrative efficiency. “It’s time we ran Gor Mahia like a modern, world-class institution - with systems, structures, and accountability,” he said.
Mr. Owalo announced the development of a comprehensive strategic plan that will serve as a roadmap for Gor Mahia’s long-term sustainability and growth. A key aspect of that plan includes aggressive player recruitment, with a focus on attracting top-tier foreign talent to strengthen the squad and elevate the team’s competitiveness.
Underscoring his leadership philosophy, Mr. Owalo emphasized that transparency, accountability, and proper governance would be non-negotiable. “We cannot build a successful club without integrity and structure. These are the foundations of lasting success,” he stated.
He also issued a direct challenge to the players, calling on them to win both the FKF Premier League and the FKF Cup this season. Securing both titles would earn Gor Mahia a return to continental football, a stage Mr. Owalo insists the club belongs on.
To motivate the team, he awarded Ksh 600,000 to the playing unit and Ksh 400,000 to the club’s management, signaling his immediate and tangible support for performance excellence.
Mr. Owalo's unveiling comes shortly after Gor Mahia’s internal elections, which saw long-serving chairman Mr. Ambrose Rachier retain his position at the helm of the club. Other elected officials include Sally Bollo, Vice Chairperson, Nick Arum, Secretary General, and Gerphas Okuku, honorary Treasurer.
Right Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, a key figure in the club’s legacy, continues to serve as Patron. The long-serving Deputy Patron, former Homa Bay County Governor, Cyprian Otieno Awiti, stepped aside for health reasons.
“We greatly appreciate the tireless effort, passion and dedication Hon. Awiti exhibited during his tenure with the club. Although he has formally stepped down, we hope that Hon. Awiti will remain available for guidance as needed,” Mr. Owalo said.
Gor Mahia appears poised to write a bold new chapter in its storied history. “Watch this space,” Mr. Owalo remarked.
With fresh leadership, renewed ambition, and strategic investment on the horizon, Gor Mahia stands at the threshold of a new era. And if Mr. Owalo’s bold declarations are anything to go by, the Green Army faithful may have much to look forward to - both at home and on the continental front.
