The energy was electric and the crowd unmissable as H.E. FCPA Governor Fernandes Barasa presided over the much-anticipated second edition of the Governor’s Bullfighting Extravaganza at Solyo Grounds in Isukha Central Ward, Shinyalu Constituency.
The vibrant event brought together traditional bullfighting enthusiasts and cultural celebrants from across Shinyalu, Lurambi, and Ikolomani constituencies. Cheers erupted as a dominant bull named Governor triumphed over its rival, Scania, in an intense 25-minute showdown that set a new event record and thrilled spectators.
In his address, Governor Barasa celebrated bullfighting not just as a cherished cultural tradition, but as a key driver of Kakamega’s economic growth. “Bullfighting is more than just tradition; it’s a driver of local enterprise,” he said. “It attracts visitors, creates jobs, and energizes our hospitality, transport, and entertainment sectors.”
To take this cultural spectacle to the next level, Governor Barasa announced the formation of a Bullfighting Premier League, which will bring together top-performing bulls from all 12 constituencies of Kakamega County. This structured league aims to formalize the sport, create more local opportunities, and build a unique brand of sports tourism that draws national and international interest.
The Governor also revealed plans for the August Bullfighting Bonanza, which is expected to attract even larger crowds and give a further boost to small businesses across the region.
The event was attended by Bullfighting President Ben Mululu, several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), and senior members of the County Executive Committee, underscoring the cultural and economic importance of the initiative.
