A shocking incident unfolded in Uasin Gishu today when a family exhumed the body of their father, Noah Tanui, who had been buried 15 years ago. The act was a dramatic protest over an ongoing land dispute, as the family faces threats of eviction from a 17-acre plot in Chemalala, near the southern bypass in Eldoret City.
The family members, in their frustration, dug up the grave in a bid to draw attention to their struggles. Though elders intervened to stop the exhumation, the casket was left exposed in the open grave, sparking a wave of disbelief among the local community.
This dispute has been simmering for years, with one family member allegedly using her connections to attempt to take over the land. Just days ago, the family had begun preparing the land to plant maize, but their efforts were disrupted when a group of armed men stormed the property, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in injuries.
Faith Jepkorir, one of the family members, accused their relative of using hired goons to block their attempts to work the land. "She has been sending people to frustrate us every time we try to use the land our father left behind," Jepkorir said, adding that the goons had even threatened their lives over the land.
Jepkorir further claimed that the relative had been boasting about her powerful connections, asserting that she would use her influence to seize control of the land. “It’s heartbreaking because this is our ancestral home. We can’t stand by and watch one person use outside forces to drive us out,” Jepkorir explained.
The exhumation caused a stir in the community, with locals rushing to witness the unsettling scene. A village elder confirmed that the incident had been reported to the police, who are expected to investigate the matter.
