FKE Refutes Atwoli’s Claims, Defends Role in Minimum Wage Implementation

The Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) has strongly dismissed recent allegations made by the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Dr. Francis Atwoli, terming them “unfounded and misleading.” The remarks in question, made during a shop stewards’ meeting on April 6, 2025, accused employers of obstructing the implementation of the minimum wage as gazetted by the Ministry of Labour.

In a press release issued Friday, FKE clarified its stance, asserting that it has consistently supported a fair and transparent process in reviewing and implementing the statutory minimum wage. The Federation emphasized its active participation in advocating for the proper constitution and functioning of Wages Councils as outlined under Section 43 of the Labour Institutions Act, 2007.

“It is important to note that the Federation has actively engaged in ensuring that the relevant processes, including the constitution and operationalization of the Wages Councils, are followed in a lawful and effective manner,” the statement read.

FKE further pointed out that President William Ruto, during the 2024 Labour Day celebrations, had directed the Labour Cabinet Secretary to initiate the process of considering a minimum wage increment of no less than 6%. However, it wasn’t until September 2024 that the General and Agricultural Wages Councils were reconstituted and gazetted, paving the way for formal consultations.

The Federation stated that following this reconstitution, it joined other tripartite social partners in meaningful dialogue regarding wage adjustments and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding legal and consultative frameworks.

The organization underscored that it is not opposed to minimum wage reviews, but insists that such changes must be based on lawful procedures and consensus among all stakeholders.

FKE concluded by reiterating its dedication to constructive labour relations, urging all parties to engage respectfully and within the confines of the law to protect the interests of workers, employers, and the country’s economy.

The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between employers and labour unions over wage policies amid rising living costs and economic pressures on businesses.
