Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati on Friday, April 11, appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Western Regional Offices in Bungoma to respond to allegations of embezzlement and irregular awarding of public tenders during his time in office.
Wangamati was summoned to record a statement in connection with the suspected misappropriation of KSh 70,205,882 through road construction tenders allegedly awarded to companies linked to him and his five brothers. The tenders, issued between the 2017/18 and 2021/22 financial years, are at the center of an active investigation by the EACC.
The former county boss is one of several individuals under scrutiny as the commission intensifies efforts to uncover the extent of the alleged financial improprieties. Sources close to the investigation indicate that the tenders were flagged for potential conflict of interest and abuse of office, with some of the companies reportedly receiving preferential treatment in the procurement process.
Webuye West Member of Parliament Daniel Sitati Wanyama is also under investigation in relation to the same matter. He recorded his statement at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi on April 1, 2025.
In a statement, the EACC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity in public service and ensuring accountability in the use of public resources. The commission emphasized that any individual found culpable would face prosecution and that efforts would be made to recover all misappropriated funds.
"The Commission is determined to pursue justice without fear or favor. We will continue to follow the evidence and take appropriate legal action where necessary," read part of the EACC’s statement.
The investigations are ongoing, and the commission is expected to issue further updates as it continues to interrogate suspects and analyze procurement documents related to the case. If found guilty, the implicated individuals could face criminal charges and asset recovery proceedings.
The developments come amid heightened public scrutiny of county governments and growing calls for stringent oversight to curb corruption in devolved units.
