Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati Appears Before EACC Over KSh 70 Million Tender Scandal

Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati is currently being grilled by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at their Western Regional Offices in Bungoma, in connection with a major corruption probe involving irregular road construction tenders.

Wangamati, who served as Bungoma's governor between 2017 and 2022, honored the summons issued by the EACC and arrived at the commission’s offices on Friday, April 11, 2025. He is currently recording a statement with investigators as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to EACC sources, the former county chief is under scrutiny for his alleged role in the irregular award of tenders worth KSh 70,205,882 during his administration. The contracts in question were allegedly issued to companies closely linked to Wangamati and five of his brothers over multiple financial years spanning from 2017/18 to 2021/22.

The Commission suspects that the tenders were fraudulently awarded, bypassing legal procurement procedures and benefiting entities with personal ties to the former governor — a direct breach of public trust and procurement laws.

“The investigation aims to establish the truth behind the allegations and ensure that any public funds lost through fraudulent deals are recovered,” said an EACC official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Appropriate action, including prosecution, will be taken against any individuals found culpable.”

If found responsible, Wangamati and others implicated could face criminal charges and potential recovery suits aimed at retrieving misappropriated county funds.

The matter has sparked mixed reactions in Bungoma, with some residents demanding accountability and swift justice, while a section of Wangamati’s supporters maintains that the probe is politically motivated.

This development comes as the EACC continues to tighten its grip on past and current county officials suspected of graft, particularly those accused of enriching themselves through manipulation of tendering processes.

As the investigations progress, the public awaits the EACC’s findings and the possible legal implications for one of Bungoma County’s most prominent political figures.

More updates to follow as the story develops.
