Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday hosted a high-level delegation of leaders from Turkana County at his private residence in Nairobi, where they held an in-depth discussion on critical issues affecting the region — with a focus on crude oil extraction, resource equity, and political representation.
The delegation was led by Hon. Anarclet Lemuya, the MCA for Lobei/Kotaruk Ward, and included Hon. Samuel Lomodo (MCA, Lokichar Ward), Hon. Peter Akono (former CEC, Turkana County), and prominent youth leader Julius Nakiru.
In a statement following the meeting, Gachagua described the engagement as “candid, enlightening, and crucial,” emphasizing the importance of inclusive dialogue in shaping the future of Turkana County and its people.
A central focus of the conversation was the ongoing crude oil exploration and extraction in the region. The leaders expressed concerns over the limited benefits being felt by the local communities despite Turkana's rich natural resource base.
"The complexities of natural resource management and the need for equitable benefits for the local populace are issues of deep concern," said Gachagua. "How we navigate this landscape could significantly impact the economic and social fabric of Turkana County."
Gachagua reaffirmed the need for a transparent and people-centered approach in the exploitation of natural resources, stressing that the voices of Turkana residents must be at the forefront of all decisions regarding their land and wealth.
Beyond resource issues, the talks also delved into Turkana’s political future and representation on the national stage. The leaders underscored the growing desire among the people for leadership that is both strong and genuinely representative of their interests.
“There is a clear hunger for leadership that prioritizes the real needs and aspirations of the Turkana community,” Gachagua noted. “As they navigate the political landscape, the people of Turkana are seeking leaders who will champion their rights, development, and inclusion at every level of governance.”
The former Deputy President lauded the delegation for their bold leadership and commitment to their people and promised to continue supporting meaningful dialogue that advances the cause of marginalized regions.
The meeting comes at a time when national conversations around resource sharing, devolution, and representation are gaining momentum, especially ahead of the next general elections.
