Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Denies Blackmail Claims, Defends His Political Stance

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vehemently dismissed claims that he attempted to blackmail President William Ruto by demanding KSh 10 billion to mobilize support in the Mt. Kenya region. Gachagua, who has recently faced allegations of attempting to leverage his political influence, stated that the accusations were unfounded and part of a political narrative aimed at tarnishing his image.

Speaking to the press, Gachagua described the allegations as “baseless” and stated that President Ruto’s administration is focused on advancing a political agenda rather than succumbing to any demands from him. “I have never asked for any money from the president, and there is no truth to the claims that I demanded KSh 10 billion to mobilize the people of Mt. Kenya,” Gachagua said, emphasizing that his relationship with the president remains focused on serving the people of Kenya.

The former Deputy President also addressed accusations that he had threatened Members of Parliament (MPs) to rally behind his political ambitions. “I have not threatened any MPs. What I did was advise them to exercise caution and not follow the president blindly, especially after the public outcry over the Finance Bill 2024,” Gachagua clarified, referring to the controversy surrounding the controversial Bill that has sparked widespread debate across the country.

Gachagua’s comments come amidst growing discontent within certain political circles over the Finance Bill 2024, which has been criticized for its proposed tax measures. Some MPs from Mt. Kenya and other regions have expressed reservations about the Bill, with many claiming that it disproportionately burdens the middle class and small businesses.

“The president is working to advance his political narrative, but as leaders, it is our duty to listen to the concerns of the people we represent,” Gachagua continued. He argued that the Finance Bill, in its current form, does not adequately address the economic challenges faced by ordinary Kenyans and urged MPs to engage in thorough debate before making any decisions.

While Gachagua remains a prominent figure in the political landscape, his remarks today suggest a growing rift between his camp and President Ruto’s administration, particularly regarding key policy issues such as the Finance Bill.

As political tensions continue to mount, all eyes remain on Mt. Kenya as the region’s leaders, including Gachagua, navigate their roles in shaping Kenya’s future political discourse. Gachagua's statements signal his intent to continue playing an influential role in national politics, advocating for the interests of his supporters while also challenging policies he believes are not in the best interest of the public.
