Former Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi Appointed CEO of Social Health Authority

Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, the former Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Health, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Social Health Authority (SHA), succeeding Robert Ingasira, who was serving in an acting capacity.

Dr. Mwangangi's appointment comes after a period of significant transitions within Kenya's health sector, notably the shift from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the newly established SHA. This transition has involved addressing challenges such as integrating former NHIF staff into the SHA and ensuring the continuity of healthcare services under the new framework.

Born in Machakos in 1986, Dr. Mwangangi pursued her high school education at Pangani Girls in Nairobi. She graduated from the University of Nairobi in 2009 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree. Furthering her expertise, she obtained a Master's degree in Health Economics and Policy from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

Throughout her career, Dr. Mwangangi has demonstrated a strong commitment to public health. Before her tenure as CAS, she held various positions, including roles with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations, contributing to health initiatives aimed at improving outcomes both locally and internationally.

During her time as CAS, Dr. Mwangangi was instrumental in implementing key health programs, such as the Linda Mama initiative, which offers free maternity services, and the development of health insurance strategies targeting economically disadvantaged populations. She also played a pivotal role in advancing Kenya's Universal Health Coverage agenda.

Her leadership is expected to steer SHA through its current restructuring phase, focusing on integrating former NHIF employees and ensuring the seamless delivery of healthcare services under the new system. President William Ruto has expressed a commitment to absorbing former NHIF employees into the SHA, emphasizing that no one will lose their job during this transition. citeturn0search6

Dr. Mwangangi's extensive experience and dedication to enhancing Kenya's healthcare system position her well to lead SHA during this critical period of transformation.
