The media fraternity in Kenya is mourning the sudden passing of Ben Ochieng Ogodo, a respected former journalist with The Standard newspaper, who died early Thursday morning in Nairobi.
Ogodo, who was well-known for his in-depth feature writing and storytelling during his time at The Standard, reportedly fell ill suddenly at his home in the early hours of the morning.
According to family members, the seasoned journalist was in good spirits on Wednesday evening, even enjoying the UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid C.F. and Arsenal, before going to bed. At around 2:00 am, he began experiencing severe chest pains and was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“He was laughing and lively last night. We were shocked when he started complaining of chest pain,” a family member said. “It all happened so fast. We did our best to rush him to hospital, but unfortunately, it was too late.”
Ben Ochieng Ogodo made his mark in Kenya’s media industry through his captivating features and human-interest stories, which often highlighted community issues and untold narratives across the country. He earned respect among colleagues for his dedication to factual, impactful journalism and his mentorship of young writers.
Though he had moved away from active newsroom work in recent years, Ogodo remained a keen follower of national events and global news, especially politics and sports.
News of his death has shocked colleagues, friends, and former readers alike, many of whom have taken to social media to express their condolences and celebrate his contributions to journalism.
“This is such a painful loss. Ben was a talented writer and a true professional,” said a former colleague from The Standard. “He had a way of bringing stories to life with heart and honesty.”
Plans for his burial are currently underway, with the family expected to release an official statement in the coming days.
