Kakamega Governor, FCPA Fernandes Barasa, has officially launched a countywide initiative aimed at boosting food security by distributing free planting fertilizer and maize seeds to vulnerable communities. The initiative, which began in Matungu Sub-county, is targeted at low-income families, women, widows, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), aiming to empower these groups in the agriculture sector and promote economic independence.
The fertilizer and seeds distribution will extend to all 12 sub-counties in Kakamega, ensuring that no farmer is left behind as part of the county’s broader strategy to tackle food insecurity. Governor Barasa emphasized the significance of the program, noting that it is a crucial step in building a resilient agricultural economy, especially for households that have historically struggled to access inputs necessary for food production.
“By ensuring that vulnerable communities have access to essential farming resources, we are not only addressing immediate food security needs but also enabling these groups to become active participants in the agricultural economy,” said Governor Barasa during the launch event.
The initiative received widespread support from local leaders, including Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and County Executive Committee Members (CECMs). The launch ceremony in Matungu was attended by Hon. Fredrick Watitwa, the MCA for the area, CECM Mophat Mandela, and other government officials, who praised the governor for his commitment to improving the livelihoods of the county’s most marginalized populations.
In addition to the fertilizer and seed distribution, Governor Barasa used the occasion to outline his administration's ongoing infrastructure and healthcare projects. He announced that the Matungu-Ogalo road upgrade to bitumen standards will be completed in two months, a development that is expected to improve transport connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The governor also provided an update on the construction of a modern maternity wing at Matungu Level IV Hospital, which is part of the county's efforts to enhance maternal healthcare services. The project aims to provide safer, more efficient healthcare for expectant mothers in the region, furthering Barasa’s vision for a healthier and more prosperous Kakamega.
“The Matungu-Ogalo road project and the ongoing expansion of healthcare infrastructure are key pillars of our administration’s focus on improving the quality of life for all Kakamega residents,” Barasa added.
The fertilizer and maize seeds distribution, alongside these infrastructure developments, reflect Governor Barasa's commitment to sustainable growth and social inclusion, paving the way for a more food-secure and economically independent county.
