Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has issued a strong condemnation following a disturbing incident in which students from Butere Girls High School were teargassed by police during the ongoing Kenya National Drama Festival (KNDF) in Nakuru.
In a statement released to the press, Governor Barasa described the incident as “wrong, regrettable, and deeply disturbing,” expressing his concern over the safety and well-being of the affected learners.
“I strongly condemn the teargassing of Butere Girls High School students by the police during the National Drama Festival. This act not only endangered innocent children but also undermines the core values of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC),” the governor said.
Governor Barasa emphasized that the CBC is designed to identify, nurture, and promote the talents of Kenyan youth through platforms such as the KNDF. He noted that such violent and unnecessary actions by law enforcement could discourage young learners from fully participating in creative and extracurricular development.
“These students traveled to Nakuru to showcase their talents, represent their school, and fly the flag of Kakamega County high. The fact that they were met with such hostility is unacceptable,” he added.
The governor called on the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Interior to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure those responsible are held accountable. He further urged national and county security organs to prioritize the safety of learners in all public forums.
Governor Barasa also extended his solidarity to the students, teachers, and parents of Butere Girls, reassuring them of his administration’s full support.
“I want to assure the affected students and their families that we are with them. Their dreams, voices, and talents matter—and we will not allow such acts of intimidation to silence them,” he concluded.
