Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has strongly urged political leaders to stop using the challenges facing the Nzoia Sugar Factory as a platform for cheap politics and instead focus on finding practical solutions to support the farmers and workers who rely on the factory for their livelihoods. Speaking to the press, the governor expressed his frustration over the ongoing political wrangling surrounding the factory's future and called for unity in tackling the issue.
“It is disheartening to see some politicians exploiting the struggles of Nzoia Sugar for their own publicity, while our farmers and workers continue to suffer due to unpaid dues and a demoralizing lack of progress,” Governor Lusaka said. “The people of this region are looking for solutions, not endless political bickering.”
Governor Lusaka also addressed the inconsistencies in the political debate, noting that some of the individuals now opposing the leasing plan for the sugar mill had originally been part of the team that recommended it. He emphasized the need for political leaders to move beyond hypocrisy and focus on the common good.
"Some of those who are now raising their voices against the leasing plan were part of the very team that recommended it in the first place," Lusaka remarked. "We must not be hypocritical. This issue is not about politics—it is about the future of Nzoia Sugar and the well-being of our people."
The governor's comments come amid increasing calls from various quarters to resolve the impasse surrounding the Nzoia Sugar Factory, which has been plagued by financial challenges and mismanagement. Farmers have been left waiting for payment, while workers are frustrated by the mill's inability to function at full capacity, further exacerbating the economic hardship in the region.
Lusaka called for an end to the "endless court cases" that have delayed action on revitalizing the factory. He urged all stakeholders—government officials, business leaders, and community representatives—to set aside differences and work together toward a solution that would breathe new life into the factory and ensure that farmers and workers are paid promptly.
“We cannot afford to keep dragging our feet in courtrooms and political arenas while our farmers are languishing. Enough talk—it’s time to act,” Lusaka said firmly. “The Nzoia Sugar Factory is a lifeline for so many in this region, and we must prioritize its revival in the best interest of the people.”
Governor Lusaka’s statement underscores the urgent need for decisive action to revive the Nzoia Sugar Factory, which has been a cornerstone of the local economy for decades. He called on all leaders to work together, set aside personal and political differences, and focus on solutions that would ensure the continued success of the factory and the well-being of the farming community.
“Let’s put the interests of our farmers first. We owe it to them to ensure that Nzoia Sugar gets back on its feet, providing jobs and securing the livelihoods of thousands in our county,” he concluded.
