Governor George Natembeya has issued a strongly worded statement in response to recent remarks by unnamed politicians questioning his Kenyan citizenship and calling for his expulsion from the country. Terming the accusations as “reckless” and “deeply troubling,” Natembeya defended his identity and service, warning against inflammatory rhetoric that threatens national unity.
In a press release dated April 24, the Trans-Nzoia County boss dismissed claims about his nationality as “false and inflammatory,” asserting his deep-rooted ties to the country and a lifelong career dedicated to public service.
“I was born in Kenya, raised in Kenya, educated in Kenya, and have devoted my entire career to public service in this country,” said Natembeya, pointing to his tenure as a Regional Commissioner and now as Governor.
Natembeya’s statement comes in the wake of political backlash following his recent call for more rigorous vetting of national identity card applicants in North Eastern Kenya—remarks that some critics have labeled discriminatory. However, Natembeya maintained that his call was driven solely by national security concerns specific to border regions.
“To brand this duty-driven appeal as ‘discrimination’ is a distortion of both fact and intent,” he stated.
The Governor also strongly condemned references made by his critics to genocidal events such as the Rwandan genocide and conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, describing such rhetoric as “abhorrent” and a dangerous escalation in political discourse.
“Our political discourse must never stoop to threats or dehumanization,” he warned.
In closing, Natembeya reaffirmed his commitment to unity, good governance, and national service, urging Kenyans to reject fear-mongering and work together for the country’s peace and progress.
“My voice will not be silenced by threats, nor will my mission be derailed by the politics of fear,” he said.
Governor Natembeya's statement has already begun to stir debate across political and civil society circles, with analysts predicting a heightened political atmosphere as leaders weigh in on the controversy.
