The Ministry of Defense has disclosed that the government will spend a staggering KSh. 44.7 billion on the construction of the Talanta Sports Complex, a key infrastructure project as Kenya gears up to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, while addressing the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture at Bunge Tower on Thursday, revealed that construction of the new stadium is currently 37 percent complete. She noted that the project is expected to be finalized by February 28, 2026.
“A total of KSh. 2 billion has already been paid to the Chinese firm contracted for the construction,” said Tuya.
The CS was briefing the committee on the progress of sports infrastructure developments under the State Department for Defense, which has been tasked with leading AFCON and CHAN preparations.
She also outlined significant investments being channeled into the rehabilitation of existing sports venues.
Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani—one of the main venues for both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027—will receive KSh. 3.6 billion for phase one of renovations, with a further KSh. 3.1 billion allocated for the second phase aimed at upgrading the facility to CAF standards required for hosting AFCON matches.
“Phase one will ensure readiness for the CHAN tournament scheduled for August this year,” said Tuya.
Nyayo National Stadium is also undergoing renovation at a cost of KSh. 1.1 billion. The CS confirmed that KSh. 200 million has already been paid for ongoing works.
In Eldoret, Kipchoge Keino Stadium—another venue earmarked to host CHAN matches—will require more than KSh. 3.5 billion for its completion. According to Tuya, KSh. 300 million has already been spent on the project.
The government’s heavy investment in sports infrastructure underscores its commitment to delivering on its international obligations and reviving the sports sector, which has long been plagued by underfunding and stalled projects.
The committee, chaired by MP Dan Wanyama, is expected to continue its oversight of the projects to ensure timely completion and accountability of the funds allocated.
