A somber mood engulfed a village in Bomet as mourners watched a heart-wrenching scene unfold during the burial of Joseph Rotich, whose ailing wife, Regina Rotich, attended his funeral confined to a hospital bed inside an ambulance.
Regina, who sustained serious injuries in the same grisly road accident that claimed her husband’s life on November 2, 2021, was wheeled to the burial site on Monday, November 15, lying on a stretcher, unable to stand or walk.
The couple’s third-born son, Nick Kimutai, recounted the horrifying events of the day his parents' motorbike collided with a road roller, leading to his father's instant death.
"My dad succumbed on the spot after suffering a head fracture. His right leg was broken and separated from the body," he recalled, his voice heavy with grief.
Regina, who was critically injured in the accident, was admitted to Longisa Hospital with fractures in her right leg and pelvis. Two weeks later, she was still bedridden and unable to walk — but insisted on attending the funeral of her husband, the father of their six children.
Photos shared by Kimutai captured the emotional moment as Regina lay quietly on the hospital bed throughout the funeral, bidding farewell to the love of her life. After the burial, she was taken back to Longisa Hospital to continue receiving treatment.
The tragic loss has plunged the Rotich family into deep emotional and financial turmoil. Regina requires several costly medical procedures before she can be discharged. Just last week, the family spent over KSh 80,000 on external metal plates. And with younger siblings still in secondary school, the family’s burdens continue to grow.
"We were once a happy family, but now the home is deserted. Mum is in hospital and a huge bill awaits us," said Kimutai. "My plea is to kind-hearted Kenyans — let’s join hands and save mum’s life."
The Rotich family is now appealing for public support to help clear the ballooning hospital bills and ensure Regina receives the treatment she urgently needs.

Their story is a painful reminder of how tragedy can strike unexpectedly — and how community support remains vital in times of heartbreak and hardship.
